2.      According the video what was the key to Phoenix’s expansion.  Explain using cause and effect.
3.      Daniel Gilbert said that one of the most curious things about humans is their ability to look into the future, foresee disaster and do nothing to prevent it.  Do you agree or disagree with this claim? Provide 3 reasons and supporting evidence to support your claim.
4.      How does the Los Angeles (LA) River represent and example of the dilemma of LA’s future water supply?
5.      How has drought and increasing competition resulted in farmers having to make some painful decisions. Be specific using details from the video.
6.      What is “blue gold”? To what extent is farming for blue gold bringing LA closer to a collapse?
7.      Around the world how is competition over water causing trouble are you surprised by this? Why/ Why not? Explain.
8.      According to Jared Diamond what is the “silver lining” to the water crisis? Be specific.
9.      Do you think actions like the ones taken by LA are enough to stem the water crisis? Explain why/ why not in detail.

10.  What valuable lessons can be learned from this segment of the documentary? Provide at least 3.

67 comments:

  1. 1) According to the video three reason for the Phoenix are
    -the water source it failing
    - they have to destroy cash crops
    - the soil layer have been compressed
    2) they built extensive amounts of pluming to carry lots of water to homes and farms, they also had ac units in there houses so people could sleep at night
    3) I agree because the amount of tecnology we have we are able to detect certain things and either do things to protect ourselves or utilize the disaster for example if it was a hurricane we could collect the water for our crops
    4) the LA river represents an example of a dilemma because it's telling us that when the water sources are low and LA turns into a ghost town all the birds will return there a utilize that LA river
    5) drought increasing make farmers have to make hard decisions like killing cash crops for example in the video the guy killed over 90 almond trees because he didn't have the water to support it
    6) blue gold is water that they find under the ground
    7) water is causing trouble all around the world because the climate changes car have a big impact on the water levels in certain areas for example the village from yesterday's homework was hit with a 50 year drought
    8) the silver lining is what is causing all the water to depreciate
9)no because even if you do limit the water you can't control the climate changes for example today would be like 80* and tomorrow like 101*.
    10) some valuable lessons that can be learned are that what we waste some other places need it more than us

  2. 1.the possible reasons that Phoenix collapse is because of its population, water, and air conditioning.

2.they key to Phoenix expansion is a constant flow of energy and water.

3.i kinda disagree on what he said because
-people could cause a disaster if they dont have what they need.
-people could stand around and not care about the bad situations.
-and people could be thinking bout something else important then the big situation in the area.

4.if theres not enough water the birds will have to come back the people are the ones whose gonna lose against that.

5.whats making famers make painful decisions is the drough and the increasing competition of water.

6.blue gold is like some kind if gold in the ground.if famers proceed, farmers would cause a alga cultural eating well turn back to a desert.

7.water is causing trouble.no im not surprised bu this because this could cause a lot of effects tors the population.

8.silver lining could cause a Eclipse of no water.

9.yeas i think thats is the case of the water crisis because people are already upset about the the water crisis.

10.the lessons that can be learn from this is..
-to always have water in the area
    -makes sure there's enough water
    -help preventing the water eclipse

  3. 1. 3 reasons can collapse are over population, no water supply of its own and one source of water for many cities

    2. Water source caused the comfort for overpopulation.

    3. I agree with Daniel Gilbert people prepare for now and not for their future, people don't want to give up their comfort to thrive until it's too late and people think they can fix everything once the time comes.

    4. LA's water supply is weak and they will eventually run out

    5. Farmers don't have water to maintain their plants and they must give up plants that have height water intake

    6. "blue gold" is water from underground water that's been drilled to get to. "Blue gold" brings LA closer to its collapse because they will eventually run out of "blue gold"

    7. Competition over water is causing trouble because people need it to live and it doesn't surprise me America wastes water like its nothing we are all aware of other countries struggle but as much as they put it in our faces we do nothing we won't change until it's too late

    8. The "silver lining" is people are realizing that we are wasting water

    9. No, actions like the ones LA has taken won't stop it from collapse it will only give them more time

    10. America doesn't care that they waste resources others dream of having even if they do they don't care enough to change their ways, although certain parts of the country need it for farming we still use it for our own enjoyment and countries need water but we can't give them eventually their weak water sources will run out and they will fight

4- If there is not enough water supply for the birds they will have to return back, the people are the ones whose going to suffer.
5- Whats makes farmers make painful decisions is the drought and the increasing competition of water.
6- Blue gold is like some type of gold in the ground. If farmers proceed, they would cause a agricultural collapse and cause the land to turn into a desert.
7- Water is an issue, and no I am not surprised about this because this could cause a lot of effects with the population.
8- Silver lining could cause a Eclipse of no water.
9- Yea, I think that is the case of the water crisis because people are already upset about the the water crisis.

  6. 1. According to the video the possible reasons for the collapse of Phoenix is that population was to big to be handled, Phoenix shared water supply with out cities and the level of the water supply were dropping.
    2. The key to Phoenix expanison was the price to live in phoenix was cheap. Especially the water. With all the wate phoenix had farmers were to grow crops.
    3. I agree with Daniel Gilbert that humans is their ability to look into the future, foresee disaster and do nothing to prevent it. For water doesn't not last for ever, but Phoenix kept using water.
    4. Los Angeles River represent and example of the dilemma of LA’s future water supply is the birds.
    5. The drought and increasing competition resulted in farmers having to make some painful decisions is that with little water coming in, farmers have to pull up trees.
    6. Blue gold is water. Farming for blue gold is bringing LA closer to a collapse is because of all the extra pumping buildings will sink into the ground.
    7. I am not surprise because for all throughout human life water was essential for survival.
    8. The silver lining to the water crisis is to organize days to use the water.
    9. No i do not think actions like the ones taken by LA are not enough to stem the water crisis because there are to many people in the world to stop the water use of every single person in the world.
    10. A valuable that can be learned from this segment of the documentary is to prepare for the unexpected, and organize water used.

  7. 1.The Phoenix possibly of collapsing:
1)the condition that motels were in
2)the air conditioner mad people not sleep at night
    3) bring large volume of water.

2.Phoenix expansion was so large that they chose not to build more motels and triller parks cause it was a large population.

3.1)The future scientists could identify the key to its expansion that is water energy.
2)The water energy is a pike that is connected together.
3)Later those water pikes were connected in the system so that they can support 20 million people with water.

4.Los Angeles river represent by letting the desert by dry and People on this planet are worry about water and food.

    5. Farmers have to make a hard decision because they had to cut down trees because they have to make room for the animals that are going to be cut up into food that is gonna be eaten and also had to make room for water so that we can have something to eat while we eat our food.

6.The blue gold is something serious because the blue gold is the biggest thing in Los Angeles that can bring to collapse that means if they have what they are suppose to have they will collapse

7.I'm not surprised because over water causes a lot of trouble all over the world. Over water is crazy cause of the effect of the population.

    8. Jared Diamond meaning of silver lining of the water crisis is that there will not be any water cause the eclipse..

    9. I think the actions like the ones taken by Los Angeles is a great cause for this case cause the crisis in the water is very high and over the top right now so that's why they are in a collapse.

10.A valuable lessons that is learned from this segment of the documentary:
    1) always keep water around you
    2) make sure we have enough water to last us
    3) help prevent eclipse water

  8. 1. Possible reasons for Phoenix's collapse is that their water supply ran dry, like the Anasazi, they did not plan properly for the bad times, and the state grew weak.
    2. According the video what was the key to Phoenix’s expansion. Explain using cause and effect.
    3. I agree with his statement because stuff like that happens in this world today and Americans believe they are invicible and they believe nothing can happen to them.
    4. Before, the LA RIver was a flowling and natural stream and more birds used to come and fly around here but as the stream got more unpure and not clean, there are less birds that come around there.
    5. The water supply needed to grow the farmers' crops was limited and they didn't have enough water to sustain the trees so they had to make the tough decision to get rid of the trees.
    6. Blue gold is the valuable resource, water. Farming for blue gold is very harming to the environment and since the water is being pulled from the ground, it's just adding to the water that is going to be used at a quick pace.
    7. Because of water competition, violent protests have broken out like the one in Bolivia. I'm not really surprised by this because it was inevitable. It was gonna happen at one time.
    8. The "silver lining" is that water policies should be more strict. For example, In LA, they said to water their plants on Tuesday and Friday and if they water them on Monday, Wednsday, or Thursday, that person's water bill would inflate.
    9. I think that it's like a bandage on a big crack on a dam, meaning I don't think it's enough to stem the water crisis, because no matter what, some problem is gonna happen with water.

    10. Plan ahead of time, think of the bad times, and do things before any risks are called.

  9. 1- The reasons for phoenix collapsing was due to there air supply, water, and the pollution in this society
2- The key to phoenix expansion was a constant supply of energy and there water supply
3- I disagree with him because you can never be to prepared for something bad to happen, you can just be ready for it but you can really never know what will happen
4- The la river represents the birds , if there is no water people will suffer
5- Farmers have to make a painful decision because like in the video the guy had to kill 90 of his plants because he didnt have enough water to keep them alive
6- Blue gold is water that is found under the ground
7- Im not shocked that water has caused a major issue around the world because water is needed in everyday life to live and some places in the world lack resources like this.
8- silver lining could cause a eclipse of wasted water
9- No it isnt good because water should be limited cause if we have climate change we can run out of resources
10- a lesson to be learned from this is
    - Always plan for the worst to happen
    - Have Enough Resources
    -Help Prevent water Eclipses

  10. 1) According to the video, three possible reasons that Phoenix could've collapsed is the large population that couldn't survive in that area, the cheap energy, and the water system they had that failed.
    2) According to the video, the key to Phoenix's expansion was a constant flow of cheap energy and water.
    3) I agree to Daniel Gilbert's statement "one of the most curious things about humans is their ability to look into the future, foresee disaster and do nothing to prevent it", because the people had a large population and they didn't have many reliable resources besides cheap energy and a water system. Another reason why I agree to this statement, is Daniel Gilbert also said that they wouldn't go out without a fight and would wait till they really run out of basic resources that they need.
    4) The Los Angeles (LA) River represents and is an example of the dilemma of LA's future water supply, by the decrease in water and how they managed it, and also from the amount of birds there used to be around the river to how many there are around the river now.
    5) Drought and increasing competition resulted in farmers having to make painful decisions, because they had to rip up 90,000 trees due to having limited water.
    6) Blue gold is aquafirst, which is found if you dig deep. Farming for blue gold is bringing Los Angeles to collapse, because if the water table gets low enough it's going to end.
    7) Around the world, competition over water causing trouble is not surprising because many areas around the world are just like Los Angeles. Some are even worse. They take advantage of water and don't know how to manage it.
    8) According to Jared Diamond, "Silver Lining" to the water crisis is to use your water when you really need it, because it's limited by the way people manage it.
    9) I think the actions like the ones taken by Los Angeles are enough to stem the water Crisis because not only Los Angeles is managing water in this kind of way, there's many other places around the world that don't value water and think it's unlimited.
    10) Valuable lessons that can be learned from this segment of this documentary are to use water wisely, don't increase your population when you don't have reliable and enough resources, and also preventing disasters and thinking about what could go wrong instead of just the positives.

    2. According the video the key to Phoenix’s expansion was cheap water and energy.
    3. I agree with Daniel Gilbert claim. I agree with his claim because Phoenix does not have an infinite water supply and are not doing anything to try and conserve water. Also people are only worried about present but do not about future.
    4. The LA river represents and example of the dilemma of LA’s future water supply is if there is not enough water the bird will come back,
    5. drought increasing make farmers have to make hard decisions like killing crops that bring in money. For example in the video stuart Woolf killed over 90,000 almond trees because he didn't have the water to support them.
    6. blue gold is water that they find under the ground.
7.I am not surprise because water was crucial human kind for survival.
8.According to Jared Diamond the silver lining to the water crisis is that cities have reality check and seeing that wasting is bad.
    9. No, actions like the ones LA has taken won't stop it from collapse it will only give them more time.
    10. Have backup plans, Conserve, and do not waste.

  12. 1- A possible reason why phoenix collapsed is because the population, the water source and the air conditioning
2-Phoenix expansion is due to all the resources they had and the flowing energy they had coming.
3-I disagree because the future can change at anytime and if you try to do something about it, it might get worse.
4-A dilemma to the future of LA's water supply is the birds and the supply itself.
5-Drought was increasing the competition of farmers by not having enough water for the farmers to work with so they had to remove crops and trees to have enough water.
6-Blue gold is water underground, it brings LA closer to collapse by running out of "Blue gold" soon.
7-Competition over water is not surprising since water is needed for people to live
    8-Silver lining is water depreciation.
9-The actions taken by LA are not enough to stem the water crisis because the demand of water will always be a lot
10-A lesson that is learned from this part of the documentary is that you shouldn't waste water or any other natural resources because they are limited, also help to prevent a water eclipse and to expect the unexpected

  13. 1. The reason phoenix collapse was it was over population, failing of water supplies and compressed soil layer
2.The key to phoenix expansion was making new homes with a/c which causes over population
    3. I agree with Daniel gilbert because they can use technolgy to tell whats coming. Another reason is some people don't care what happens around them. Final reason is that people are so use to not nothing to happen to them they don't know what to do when something bad happens
    4. An example of dilemma of LA future water supply is eventually gonna get low and the birds will come back and take advantage what little water thats left
    5. The drought and increase in competition led farmers to make bad decisions by not having enough water for their crops
6.Blue gold is water thats found underground. Blue gold will make LA collapse because its not really good for you also it will eventually run out.
    7. Water is causing trouble, no I'm not surprised because after the 50 year drought
8.The silver lining is what is making people realize they are wasting water
9.i say no because it really wouldn't change they would just get extra time and something like a drought can happen
10.valueable lessons that can be learn is to learn to appreciate water ,another one is be wise on how you use the water , finally other countries may need that water

  14. 1) the possible reasons the Phoenix collapsed was because it have a poor energy system, the water system failed and the population was over crowded.

    2) They key to Phoenix expansion were energy and water . They built large amount of water sources for the homes and farms and used energy sources for the people homes example air conditioners was placed in people home .

    3) I agree with what Daniel Gilbert say because if we have a strong enough Eco system and our natural resources don't lack it could help us for and future disasters . We should always for the future because we never know when we can lack .

    4) Los Angeles represent and example of dilemma with there water system because if the water system become weak the birds will come back and the people will lose against that will ad suffer .

    5) Drought and increasing competition resulted in farmers having painful decisions because if another farmers it killed most of their plants and it was hard for them
to replace them when the water supply is weak.

    6) Blue gold is water from under the ground and if this If this water system is was to collapse the Los Angeles economy will also collapse .

    7) I'm not surprise because some areas is not as fortunate as Americas , we have a good water supply and others may not have .

    8) Silver Lining is whats causing the water system to fail

    9) No , because Los Angeles probably have a bad water system and even if the people do complain about it , it will still take a matter of time to be fixed .

    10) Some lessons that can be learned is to protect our natural resources, our water system and always prepare for the future .

  15. 1. Potential causes in Phoenix's collapse are:
    a. A drought
    b. The region where it was located could not handle a population size of millions.
    c. Overpumping had exhausted the moisture out of the Earth's aquifers, resulting in fractures in the land and the ground beneath huge cities sunk.
    2. The answer to Phoenix's expansion was water, which provided sustenance for life, and could also be converted to electricity, cheap free energy, which kept an AC running on humid days.
    3. I disagree with Daniel Gilbert's belief because:
    a. If a meteorologist sees an impending hurricane, he would notify the world about it on television.
    b. A seismologist can predict an upcoming earthquake or aftershock through studying gas seepage and seismographs.
    c. In older times, Prophets envisioned nearing crises.
4.The Los Angeles River's sources of water are depleting due to lack of precipitation, hence a drought promoting reduction of water in the river.
    5. The drought forced farmers to conserve resources from the watter supply by disposing the crops they grew, worked hard on, and earned wealth from. Also, competition among farmers increased because some discovered selling water allocations made for a good business alternative.
    6. Blue gold is a term used to refer to water that can be attained from underground aquifers. The long term effect of mining for blue gold is that the ground can dry up, crack, and sink.
    7. Feuds over water evolved into protest, and as an outcome people die in violent clashes with the riot control. I am not surprised by these people's actions because water is a major necessity for living, and when a major necessity is in jeopardy, individuals will endlessly fight for it.
    8. The silver lining to the water dilemma is a reality check. If people put their minds together and at work, they can innovate new ways of obtaining and/or replenishing the water.
    9. I believe that the water crisis can be averted with Los Angeles' new policy because during the dry season, if less water is used the more there is in reserve. An extra amount of water makes a drought more tolerable.
    10. Valuable lessons that can be grasped from this documentary are:
    a. An alternative policy should be utilized when an uncontrollable obstacle is faced.
    b. Always be prepared for the worst.
    c. Do not waste resources, use them in moderation or they can result in environmental destruction if overused.

  16. 1. The three reasons why Phoenix collapsed was because of their population, no water supply, air conditions.
    2. They expanded because they started building water supply to carry to houses and farms. The cause was they build water passage ways and the effect is that there is a flow of water and energy.
    3. i agree with Daniel Gilburt because people do see disasters happening and they dont prevent it from happening. One reason is that have technology where it let us know wether a hurricane or earthquake is coming but we dont react quickly to it and try to solve the problem when its to late. Another reason is that people live in the present and dont worry about the future. Last reason is that the people don't take it seriously and are thinking about other bad problems.
    4. The river in the future will be weak and will run out and everybody will start using the L.A river.
    5. Farmers are effected greatly by drought because they have to kill their crops. An example is that in the video this Farmer had to cut down his trees because he didn't have any water. This increases competition between other farmers because of the water drought.
    6. Blue Gold is the water found underground. L.A can collapse because they can also run out of blue gold if two many people are using it.
    7. Competition of water is the result of water changes. When it is hot it is more likely for there to be a drought. The world will become violent and fight to get water because of the drought happening.
    8. The silver lining is that there would be no water and people will have to stop wasting water.
    9. The water crisis is something very important and we cat control the weather changed for example sometimes its 100 degrees outside one day and sometimes 60 degrees outside another day in the summer.
    10. The three lessons that i learned is to stop wasting water, help prevent the water crisis, and use it for necessary purposes, and to plan before bad things occur.

  17. 1. Phoenix could of collapsed because of a heavy air pollution, Water supply shortage and then soil layers compressing and drying and couldn't supply with how fast there supplies were dissapearing
2.Phoenix had really cheap energy and water
    3. Humans currently know about three problems, Air pollution, The Glaciers, and Global Warming We know what will happen if we don't do something to stop it however; we continue in almost are same ways. These three factors could create a domino effect and lead to each other this is really important to stop this. We forsee it with our technology but we do not fix it with our technology. In china air pollution is at all time high that it actually affects chinese children and their respiratory systems.Global warming destroys the glaciers and the heat in india has started to kill people this month. Its going up to 120 degress and people are advised to not even go outside at the risk of dying.
    4. The LA river tells us how the water in LA is doing. It also will lead to a birds return if the water dissapears from LA.
    5. Farmers had to start killing cash crops, crops made for selling because of not having enough money to support it. A man in the video for example had to cut down 90 ALMOND TREES BECAUSE THE WATER WASN'T SUFFICIENT ENOUGH!
    6. Blue gold is a crucial underground resource that could cause LA to turn back into a dessert if reeped
    7. Water is crucial to all human life. You cannot live without water so compeition for life basically is not surprising. America and many other countries waste water and if a country want's to fight for it I wouldn't be surprised
8.The Silver Lining could cause an eclipse of no water
9.Limiting water is fine but the pollution and heats destroying the water isn't going to help. We need more steps we need more of a commitment to keep the water in check. Without that water alot of people will die and Limiting use is not what else you need.
10.Valuable lessons that can be learned are probably the lesson of conservation, Expecting the unexpected, and keeping the situation from getting any worse, because it can get worse.

    7) I'm not surprise because some areas is not as fortunate as America we have good water system but if you go like to other places they might not have such a great water sytem

    8) The Silver Lining is the reason why the water is failing and its starting to make the American people relize that we are wasting water

    9) I think that the water crisis can be helped with Los Angele's if they get new policy around the wamer seasons and if they dont use as much water the more we will save for other reasons

    10) Some lessons that can be learned from this is that we should stop wasting so much water and start saving it and we would not have so many droughtss and crops going bad

5.The drought and increase in competition led farmers to make bad decisions on their crops by not having enough water for their crops.
6.Blue gold is water from under the ground and if this water system it was to collapse, the Los Angeles economy will also collapse.
    7. I'm not shocked because some areas are not as fortunate as America is, we have a good water supply and others may not have the same as we do.
8.Silver Lining is what's causing the water system to fail.
    9. No , because Los Angeles (LA) probably have a bad water system and so even if the people do complain about it , it will still take a matter of time to be fixed .
    10. Some lessons that can be learned from this is that we should and need to stop wasting so much water & start saving it & we would not have so many droughts and crops going bad if we just saved up are water supply.

     1. one reason why i think  Phoenix collapsed because it had cheap energy and not enough water.  another reason why i think Phoenix collapsed because some of the labedro was getting lower.  a third reason why i think Phoenix collapsed is because many of them got drouts
      2. the Phoenix  expansion  was the croe of increasing water
      3. human ability to look out into the future.  i  I disagree about that because people don't have that right technologies to see in the future.
      4. they start making holes for the water so this way it won't over flow.  they get many droughts they don't get that many water. but they make holes to save the water in.
     5.  ever since they decided to have it droughts man the farmers would not be able to Farm because they did not have any water source so they was not able to grow anything.
     6. the blue gold was the hole in the ground having no source of water.
     7. People are having a competition over water this could cause trouble and unorganized sources many people should not fight over water.
     8. he means by the silver line if the different mining by getting very min line.

  21. 1. According to the video the possible reasons that phoenix fell are
    – over population
    – the water source was failing
    – they had to destroy cash crops
    2. The key to phoenix’s expansion was the flow of energy and water.
    3. I agree with that claim because we may see a problem in the future but are too lazy to deal with it when they see it, we think that nothing can happen to us, and nobody cares until the moment comes.
    4. The LA River is an example of the dilemma of LA’s water supply because even the birds that fly around there barely drink it.
    5. Drought and increasing competition resulted in farmers having to make some painful decisions because there isn’t enough water to feed large water consuming plants, so farmers dug up and killed those plants. For example, in LA the farmers decided to dig up their almond trees because if the lack of water.
    6. “Blue gold” is water, and digging up blue gold drains the ground where it’s from and cause the land to become a desert.
    7. In Bolivia the competition over water has caused riots and unnecessary violence.
    8. According to James Diamond the silver lining of the water crisis is that people are realizing that the water policies should be strict everywhere.
    9. I think the actions like the ones taken by LA are not enough to stem the water supply mainly because water is a necessity and people will abuse the policy still knowing the consequences.
    10. The lessons that can be learned by this are – to preserve water – be prepared for a drought like no other – only use water when it’s necessary.

  22. 1. The possible reasons that Phoenix collapsed according to the video are not enough water supplies, over population which means fewer water supplies for everyone to use and having to cut trees/plants down that took a lot of water. The cause was getting a large supply of water for the cities need and the effect was that people we had enough water for individuals also we can farm with that water supply. Another cause was air conditioning and the effect was people sleeping comfortably at night.
    2. The key to Phoenix’s expansion was getting a huge amount of water supply for millions and air conditioning that helped people sleep at night.
    3. Daniel Gilbert said that one of the most curious things about humans is their ability to look into the future, foresee disaster and do nothing to prevent it. I agree with this because there have been many situations we have been ignoring. For example pollution, war and global warming. We always see it coming but never do anything to prevent until it is our main priority and sometimes it can be too late to prevent it.
    4. Los Angeles (LA) River represents and is an example of the dilemma of LA’s future water supply because when their water supply is low the birds will come back and soon the city will be a ghost town.
    5. Drought and increasing competition has resulted in farmers having to make some painful decisions by them having to decide what plants they want to keep. For example he in the video he was cutting down trees that were requiring a lot of water and they couldn’t afford to pay for that amount of water.
    6. “Blue gold” is water that farmers got after risking by drilling underground. Farming for blue gold bringing LA closer to a collapse because they are taking the water supply that la is running low on already.
    7. Competition over water around the world is causing trouble because countries are fighting over it. This surprises me because I never that water was going to be a huge problem since the world is 2/3 water.
    8. According to Jared Diamond the “silver lining” to the water crisis is countries wasting water and realizing it until they get a reality check
    9. I think actions like the ones taken by LA are enough to stem the water crisis are not enough. I think that because telling people to use less water won’t be enough. As soon in the video farmers are getting “blue gold” by drilling the grounds.
    10. Valuable lessons that can be learned from this segment of the documentary is to prevent problems by thinking about the future, get water supply that we need and to limit water being used.

  23. 1: The conditions of the Phoenix's collapse is:
    air conditions
too big of a population to control
    failure of water source
2: The key to Phoenix's expansion was the abundant flow of water. it was very much easy for farmers to grow their crops.
3: I agree with this statement because matters occur in the world but we don't fear them. We take it for granted that we have these resources, although it happened in the past we don't think that it could ever possibly happen to us.
4: When the LA river flowed, more birds were around that area but when the stream was not that good as it once was there were less birds there.
5: The farmers needed the water supply, without the water they were forced to make terrible decisions which were to destroy the crops they once grew.
6: Blue gold is the water from underground. It was a very risky thing to the environment, they sucked up all the water under the ground so they can continue to grow their crops.
7: Riots, protest and violence were the causes of the of the water competition. This situation is not one to be surprised with because it was out of the reach of the people. There was nothing they could have done.
8: The silver lining is a way in which people noticed their misuse of water. In LA, they now only water their crops on Tuesdays and Fridays if they water their crops on other days their bills will be much more expensive than it already was.
9: I don't think these actions are enough because it doesn't matter how hard they tried, they probably could have controlled the water that was within their reach but not nature, it doesn't always stay the same . Something must happen.
    10: Plan before time
    conserve
create what you can afford, stick to what's within your reach

  33. 1. 3 possible reasons why pheonix collapsed include the fact that pheonix had a horrible water supply. This led too the people having to cut down crops and forrests since they were unable to maintain them. Another possible reason is that Pheonix was overpopulated which meant whatever little supplys and food was left, had to be split many more ways.
    2. The key to Pheonix's expantion was the fact that the flow of water was working perfectly with enough water for everyone, and the energy also had a constant flow which allowed many people to use ac's and other electrical devices.
    3. I agree with his statement because people prove his point without even realizing. People do not care about the future beacuse in their mindset, what happens doesnt matter because theyll be dead by then. Also many people have the mindset that if the problem hasnt accured yet then theres no point in paying attention too it. One example of these actions are the people who support global warming and still do many things to pollute the air.
    4. The LA River is an example of a dilema because it shows how the water system collapsed and it caused the birds who once were feasting on the river water, to flee from the drying up river.
    5. The reason farmers had to make hard choices were because they had a limited amount of water. THis meant there was only enough water to maintain some of their plants causing them to kill all the rest. If a farmer wanted to still maintain and water all the crops they had, their water bill would skyrocket tremendously compared to what the price was when there were no water shortages.
    6. The blue gold is extra water in the earth which is drilled from underground to help farmers water their crops. Drilling for this blue gold though, affects the earth in a very negative way.
    7. Around the world, water is causing riots, pretests and even arguements between nations. This is very suprising beacuse more than half of the earth is water and people must still fight over it.
8.The "silver lining" was a set of restrictions/ guidelines limiting people to how much water they use. THis is to hopefully limit the amount of water waisted.
    9. I think the actions taken by LA wouldve been enough to stem the water supply but only if these actions were taken upon sooner. if you wait till the people are already suffering it will be too late and most of the water will already by wasted.
    10. One important lesson i think learned today was that you never realize how much you waste until you, yourself feels what its like to he suffering in need of the goods u once wasted.

  34. 1 3 possible reasons that phoenix collapsed was cause of its population, lack of water, & its air conditioning

2 according to the video, the key to phoenix's expansion was the flowing water & energy. The effect of this is that more homes would have water to use & energy for their home.

3 I would say that I disagree with his claim cause you wouldn't know what it would exactly look like & there fore would not know if your exactly seeing how its really going to be. Disaster comes naturally, you wouldnt know when it would happen.

4 the LA river represent an example of dilemma cause if there wouldn't be enough water, then the birds would fly back.

5 drought and increasing competition resulted in farmers having to make some painful decisions cause if they didn't have enough water, then they would have to cut down a larger number of trees.

6 blue gold is underground water. This can have LA to collapse cause if there is no more blue gold, then there would be no more water for them to have.

7 competition over water is causing trouble cause water is needed for many things. Such as, farming, surviving, etc. Fights & deaths were caused because of it. No I wouldn't be surprised by this because water is needed to keep us clean, wash up clothes for good hygeine, stuff like that.

8 the "silver lining" to the water crisis is to make people realize how important water is.

9 I think the actions like the ones taken by LA is not enough cause they can abuse that & over use it & wouldn't have no more water to use.

10 valuable lessons that can be learned from this is conserve the best you can. Another is plan what you need ahead of time.

    2. According to the video, the key to Phoenix's expansion was their affordable water and energy such as air conditioning

    3. I agree with this claim because humans tend to ignore what may happen in the future and only pay attention to the present. Also, they sit there and wait for disaster to happen instead of making an effort to prevent it. As Daniel Gilbert said, "The majority of people on this planet, they're overwhelmed with concerns about their immediate well being." Meaning humans would only worry about themselves and what's happening in the present rather than worrying about the future and trying to protect it.

    4. The Los Angeles River represents an example of the dilemma of LA's future water supply due to the decrease in wetland birds who would usually be around the river drinking the water.

    5. Drought and increasing competition resulted in farmers having to make some painful decisions such as destroying their trees because they don't have enough water to sustain them.

    6. "Blue gold" is water allocations that farmers began to sell. Farming for blue gold is bringing LA closer to a collapse due to the fact that they're pulling a lot of water out of the ground and the less water they have the more likely the drought will lead to a deserted area.

    7. Competition over water is causing trouble around the world in areas such as Bolivia where there are protests due to the privatization of their local water supply. I am not surprised by this because water is such an important source on Earth and to humans and lack of it will cause competition.

    8. According to Jared Diamond, the "silver lining" to the water crisis is many cities acknowledging the price they'll pay for wasting water giving them a reality check that may help them avoid a disaster similar to the Anasazi civilization's.

    9. I think actions like the ones taken by LA aren't enough to stem the water crisis. I say this because them limiting the water supply does not exactly help stop the water crisis it will only help extend time.

    10. Valuable lessons that can be learned from this segment of the documentary are to not waste water, we should help avoid future disasters by doing something about it now and do not overpopulate our areas.

  42. 1) According to the video, the possibilities of Phoenix collapse are over population, no water supply of its own and Air conditioning.

    2) According the video the key to Phoenix’s expansion was the flow of water that was working perfectly with enough water for everyone, and the energy that had a constant flow.

    3) I agree with Daniel Gilbert because the amount of technology we have we are able to detect certain things and do things to protect ourselves. These days many people have the mindset of when the problem hasn't occured yet then there is no point in paying attention to the situation.

    4) One example of the dilemma of LA’s future water supply by seeing the amount of birds helps see the future water supply.

    5) Drought and increasing competition have made farmers to make hard decisions like killing cash crops. For example, the guy killed over 90 almond trees because he didn't have the water to support it.

    6) Blue gold is an underground water. This can have LA to collapse because if there is no more blue gold, then there would be no more water for them to have survive.

    7) Water is an issue somewhere around the world and no I am not surprised about this because we need water in order to survive and without it can effect the population.

    8) According to Jared Diamond the silver lining to the water crisis is when people waste water and they use water for granted. Also for them to realize how water is the most precious thing in the world.

    9) I do not think the actions like the ones taken by LA are enough to stem the water crisis because people will still take advantage of water, they need to make laws to stop the abuse.

    10) The valuable lessons that can be learned from this segment of the documentary are to not waste water, trying not to be over populated, and always to prepare for future references.

  43. 1. Because the region that Phoenix was iin couldn't support of population that large , they had a poor source of water , and because of they're air conditioning.

    2. The key to Phoenix's expansion was because of their, “Constant flow of cheap energy and water”.

    3. I agree because humans
    1. Care about the immediate well being
    2. Ignore the risk of a drought
    3. And they only worry about all the good and not the bad.

    4. Because Jared Diamond could've told by the amount of birds that were at the LA River ,the water supply was decreasing.

    5. Because they had to decide which crops to destroy and because of the drought they had to destroy trees.

    6. Blue gold is basically water that is found underground, and if the farmers continue with the blue gold much of the land and turn back into a desert.

    7. Because back in 2000 there was a violent protesting in Bolivia and the public fought back for the privatization of their water , and I'm not surprised because water is a necessity that everyone needs to survive.

    8. The silver lining the diamond sees is that many people are wasting water and these cities that are wasting the water need a reality check.

    9. Yes because if a lot of city start to follow these actions then we wouldn't have as much of a problem with the water supply.

    10. Valuable lessons that I learned is
    1.To not waste water
2.Take action before anything bad occurs
    3.Use Water Wisely

    7) I wouldn't be surprised if competition over water is causing trouble because as much water there is, there is also a lot of people using the water.
    8) The silver lining is not to waste water and only use it on certain days of the week, according to Jared Diamond.
    9) Actions like this one taken by LA is not enough to stem the water crisis because people are going to keep using the water for unimportant reasons.

    -the water source it failing
    - they have to destroy cash crops

  46. 1. According to the video, the 3 reasons are water problem, overpopulation and lack of resources.
    2. According to the video, the key to phoenix's expansion was to flow water and improve the situation in the environment that they live in.
    3. I disagree with Daniel Gilbert, 3 reasons why is because not everything is in human's hands to stop disaster and disasters are powerful and strong and sometimes humans are unable to prevent and sometimes it's really hard to figure how to prevent disaster.
4.The birds will come back if there is less water and not enough.
5.It resulted in farmers to make painful decisions because of the lack of the water.
6.Blue gold is the water that founded under the ground and it will collapse because they will not have enough.

  47. 1. The reasons why Phoenix collapsed was because of its overpopulation, air conditioning, and lack of water supply.
    2. The key to Phoenix expansion was its flow of water and energy.
    3. I disagree bc people are always trying to change what is happening in our world. People try to change the world for the better but sometimes those people aren't always taken seriously so it looks like we never do anything about it.
    4. The LA river is an example because there use to be so many water type birds that would go to it but now there aren't many because there's less water flowing in the river.
    5. Drought has led to farmers having to destroy their trees because they couldn't take care of them because of the lack of water.
    6. Drilling "Blue Gold" will bring LA closer to a collapse eventually because the water that they find won't be enough if they keep living off of it.
    7. Im not surprised by the fact that people are having competition about water supplies because eventually we won't have it so people just want to survive as long as they can.
    8. The "Silver Lining" to the water crisis is countries wasting their water supplies and realizing too late that it's not enough.
    9. I don't think that the actions taken by LA are enough to solve the water crisis because soon there won't be any water to drill out.
    10. The valuable lesson that can be learned from this segment is not to waste water. Overpopulating is always a problem. Also we must be prepared for anything that can lead to a collapse.

  48. 1. The possible reason Phoenix collapsed was because
    - The population over growth
    - Water systems that had failed
    - The conditions the ventilation systems were created
    2. The population had grown because they were so dependent of their water system
    3. I disagree with what Daniel had said because
    - most problems are created by humans
    - they have the ability to stop certain things from happening
    - chaos of overgrowth in the population had taken full inventory
    4. LA has a weak but sustainable resource of water that may end soon
    5. It may end their civilization and weaken their food sources which would leave them with nothing
    6. Water that has been taken inventory of from below the surface of the world
    7. Water is a very dependent resource and is causing trouble
    8. People around the world depend on the source of water many people would die with out having the source of water
    9. Actions from LA will not stop at this rate

  49. 1. According to the video 3 reasons why Phoenix collapsed is
    - Overpopulation
    - Too much drilling cause sink holes in cities
    - Drought
    2. The key to Phoenix’s expansion was the constant flow of energy and water.
    3. I agree with this claim because people should always prepare for the worst, everything is not always rainbows and sunshine and we know that. If we ever were to experience a drought, we should be prepared before hand knowing what happened in the past. For example, the Anasazi experiences a 50 year drought which they couldn't do anything about since they didn't save enough water. We could use that mistake they made and help out selves to prevent it from happening again.
4.Los Angeles (LA) River represents and is an example of the dilemma of LA’s future water supply because the birds that fly around that area barely drink the water that's there.
5.Drought and increasing competition resulted in farmers having to make painful decisions, the painful decision was to cut up to 900,000 thousand trees to save up water for themselves.
    6. Blue gold is underground water which is useful for farmers, the negative side to this is that it could lead to sinkholes which could cause major issues.
    7. Around the world people are fighting over water, and putting up riots because there isn't enough water for people to drink. Yes i was surprised by this, I didn't realize this was big issue since water covers most of earth and a percentage of that is drinkable.
    8. The "silver lining" is to use water when needed instead of wasting it. Such as watering plants, You only water it 2 times a week. This could save a good amount of water.
    9. I think the actions like the ones taken by LA are not enough to stem the water crisis because knowing the issue that is going on with water, people will still over use water, or use it when its not needed because people tend to care about them selves. Its may work out for a couple of months, but we will eventually comeback to the same issue.
10.Lessons that could be learned is
1.) Don't waste water, use it when absolutely needed or else this could result in a drought which will cause major downfall in society.
2.) Plan for the worst, a drought could occur sometime in the future, we should save a good amount of water for the people and conserve.
3.)Have extra resources at hand just in case.

  50. 1. According to the video what are the possible reasons that Phoenix collapsed? Provide at least 3 possible reasons.

The possible reasons that Phoenix collapsed was that they made a city for millions in a city in north America that couldn't support that many people. Another reason would be that the only have one supply of water that goes to many different farm land and other cities, and that water source would end up depleted. Another possible reason would be that they destroyed many crops that could of cost millions.

    2. According the video what was the key to Phoenix’s expansion. Explain using cause and effect.

The key to Phoenix’s expansion was the flow of cheap and sustainable energy and a large water source.

    3. Daniel Gilbert said that one of the most curious things about humans is their ability to look into the future, foresee disaster and do nothing to prevent it. Do you agree or disagree with this claim? Provide 3 reasons and supporting evidence to support your claim.

I disagree with this because people are not going to wait around for a nature disaster to happen.

    4. How does the Los Angeles (LA) River represent and example of the dilemma of LA’s future water supply

The LA's population is over 11 million and they water supply would slowly we used all up and the people of los angles would have no source of water and that civilization would collapse. Instead of learning from older civilization mistakes, here go there new ones that are making the same mistakes.

    5. How has drought and increasing competition resulted in farmers having to make some painful decisions. Be specific using details from the video.

They had to make painful decisions but killing many crops because they used up a lot of water.

    6. What is “blue gold”? To what extent is farming for blue gold bringing LA closer to a collapse?

Blue gold is water and they compared it to the gold rush it only lasted a short period of time, this could be a major cause of the collapse of LA

    7. Around the world how is competition over water causing trouble are you surprised by this? Why/ Why not? Explain.

No I am not surprised by this because the competition for water would rise because of over population

    8. According to Jared Diamond what is the “silver lining” to the water crisis? Be specific.

The silver lining is a alert to really notice how much water they really waste.

    9. Do you think actions like the ones taken by LA are enough to stem the water crisis? Explain why/ why not in detail.

I do think that LA stem to the water crisis is enough because just buy using half the about of water everyday would save a lot of the LA's water supply.

    10. What valuable lessons can be learned from this segment of the documentary? Provide at least 3.

One valuable lesson that could be learned from this part of the documentary would be to think about the bad times and how your country will survive without a vital resources such are water. Another lesson would be not to over populate a area that can not sustain a large about of people, for example like Arizona they over populated and when a drought came they weren't able to provide water for everyone. Another lesson could be to preserve the valuable resources you have such as water because you wont miss it until its gone.

According to the video the expansion of Phoenix was due to constant energy and water coming in.

I agree with Daniel Gilbert because People will always be curious about the future and will make assumptions due to what they know already. Also People will try to find these things out because they want to protect themselves from the danger of the environment.

According to the video The dilemma of la's future water supply doesn't look good because the LA river's water is bad, i know this because not even the birds would drink the water and the water is almost dried up.

According to the video Drought and increasing competition resulted in farmers having to make powerful decisions like removing the crops and trees in the are because of the lack of water that they had.

According to the video "Blue Gold" is water underground it brings LA closer to collapse because it is limited and can effect the environment in a bad way.

Competition for water doesn't surprise me because everyone has needs and water is an important need for humans because it both hydrates humans and helps crops grow for food.

According to the video Silver lining is when people waste the water and take it for granted.

According to the video the actions taken by LA are not enough to stem the water crisis because the water is limited.

    4. The abandoned of power plants is a metaphor for today civilization because we tend to abandoned the power we have.
    5. The reason that Rome had collapsed because while they were expanding people started to invade.
    6. The world’s energy crisis is like Rome’s energy crisis because as the population growth keeps increasing, it gets harder to support the civilization with the different supplies needed in order to overcome a collapse.
    7. According to Jared Diamond Rapid transport, clean energy, non-congested cities would greatly reduce the chance of a modern collapse.
    8. Nature’s oldest and most powerful energy source is the sun.
    9. The thing that surprised me was that Rome expanded from being so small to something very big. Something that least surprised me was that Rome military was very good.
    10. One thing I learned from this is always plan for bad things to happen dont wait for it to happen because you don’t know what it can be the best thing to do is plan for failure

  63. 1. Possible reasons for Phoenix's collapse is that their water supply ran dry, like the Anasazi, they did not plan properly for the bad times, and the state grew weak.

  65. . According to the video the possible reasons that phoenix fell are
    – over population too many people not enough crops
    – the water source was failing
    – they had to destroy cash crops
2-The key to phoenix’s expansion was the flow of energy and water.
3- i agree with that claim because we may see a problem in the future but are too lazy to deal with it when they see it, we think that nothing can happen to us, and nobody cares until the moment comes. because we take advantage of everything
    10. The lessons that can be learned by this are to preserve water be prepared for a drought like no other – only use water when it’s necessary
